FAMILIES living near Droitwich playing fields fear a repeat of last year's violence and drug problems now travellers have moved on to the site.

Around 10 caravans moved on to King George Playing Fields in the early hours last Friday, according to Councillor John Cook.

"People are very wary as last year they had all sorts of problems when travellers came here," he said.

"They left the field in a terrible mess with human waste as there's no toilet facilities. And when they'd gone we found syringes which a special squad from Wychavon (District Council) had to come and dispose of."

Coun Cook added that there had also been violent scenes when residents had tried to confront travellers about their concerns.

"Somebody actually got into a fight," he said.

"I've had complaints from people in the Chawson area who are affected and it's no wonder they're concerned after last time."

As the Evening News went to press no one from the council was available for comment. The gipsies declined to comment.
