KARATE: The Great Britain team was inspired by the displays of Tsunami Kimura Shukokai Karate club members at the KSI European Championships.

Competitors from Kidderminster and Bewdley took a host of medals among six golds, eight silvers and seven bronzes for 29 Brits in Coimbra, Portugal.

They were up against opponents from the host country, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia.

Sensei Solfrid Daniels won golds in the Ladies Kata event and the Ladies Heavyweight fighting event, both for the third time running.

Daniels was also in the Kata-winning ladies team with Tsunami's Jennie Price and Dudley's Mandie Read.

Coached by Clem Braithwaite fifth dan, their fighting team took silver through the busy Daniels, Read and London's Gemma Bramwell. In the children's events, Price won the girls' 10 to 13 years kumite contest with local girl Kara Bennett claiming silver.

Team Kata Great Britain secured bronze in the 10 to 13 age section through Bennett, Emily Powell and Dudley's Alex Whyte.

Shihan Eddie Daniels, seventh dan, chief instructor for the Shukokai Karate Federation, was pleased with the results which were toasted at a big end-of-tournament party.

The British team then took a five-day break in the sun in Figueria Da Foz.

The next big event will be the World KSI Championships held over 3 days at Aston Villa Leisure Centre in late May next year.
