TO open this silver anniversary concert, the Mayor of Kidderminster, Councillor Nigel Knowles, presented a shield to Husum Musical Director, Thomas Wiese, before Rod Summers gave a brief history of the orchestra.
Wiese conducted the first item, the overture to Hansel and Gretel which did not impress me.
Then David Stowell, the orchestra's MD took over the baton for Elgar's wonderful Cello Concerto in E Minor, with soloist Troels Svane.
His cello had a wonderful mellow tone, and he gave a tremendous performance, from my favourite first movement through to a breathtaking final movement, played with great feeling. His performance was enhanced by the orchestra accompaniment, which was excellent, apart from a shaky start from the violas.
David Stowell showed a new talent - that of stand-up comedian - entertaining with a couple of tales while members of the orchestra grappled with a rogue music stand.
The final piece, Brahms' Second Symphony, was worth waiting for, producing the orchestra's best performance of the night.
VJS.
