A SURGEON treating a Worcester tot who was injured in an accident with a taxi says he is happy with his progress, the two-year-old's family has revealed.

Close relatives of Hamad Shahid say the head surgeon at the Diana, Princess of Wales Children's Hospital in Birmingham is hopeful the youngster's condition should improve, but will not know the extent of the injuries until Hamad regains full consciousness.

"The surgeon has operated on a five-year-old child with similar injuries, but he's not responding as well as Hamad is," said Ishtiaq Ahmed, one of the toddler's uncles.

"The surgeon did a brain scan last week and he is happy with the improvement.

"However, there's no change since last week. He's still not moving well on his left-hand side. When he wakes up he cries because of the pain."

Hamad was moved out of intensive care into a general ward at the end of last week.

He has been treated there since he received head and leg injuries in the accident in Wyld's Lane, last Monday.

Mr Ahmed said Hamad was still stable and the family was aware it would take time for the toddler to improve.

"His father and mother are with him all the time. When he wakes up it will be his parents he recognises first," he said.

"Other members of the family are also over there a lot. Somebody goes there every day."

Members of the family are still praying for the youngster.

"His grandparents, who were with him when the accident happened, have been there quite a lot and they are OK now because they know he's alive," added Mr Ahmed.

"We all hope he'll be home as soon as possible."
