HOUSING bosses have decided to sell a town hostel for the homeless.
The Hanbury Road property was used as short-term emergency accommodation for homeless families.
But Spa Housing Association says it was not popular because it offered very limited accommodation.
Before the decision to sell the property could be made, the housing association had to end an agreement with Wychavon District Council.
When the authority sold its housing stock to the association, one of the conditions was that the Hanbury Road property would provide accommodation for the homeless.
But changes in Government legislation now mean the building is no longer suitable for this purpose and Wychavon agreed to release the association from its obligation.
The association's housing manager, Sue Heelas, said: "We have felt for a while the property was inadequate and we now plan to sell the house.
"In future, we will allocate suitable properties in our housing stock, attempting to match people's needs within accommodation available.
"Our aim is to improve the service and facilities available for the homeless."
Cllr Pam Davey (Con, Droit.Central) said: "I have known for some time the property was unsuitable.
"I shall be watching to see that adequate provision is made for Droitwich Spa residents."
