A MAN has been arrested after a fire reaching temperatures of more than 1,000C swept through a Stourport luxury home, destroying the building.

The 49-year-old man, who was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of committing arson, was interviewed and released on bail to return to Kidderminster Police Station on Monday.

More than 50 firefighters from Kidderminster, Stourport, Bewdley and Worcester fought the blaze shortly after midnight on Sunday at The Uplands, Wilden Top Road.

Fears the occupants of the house were inside proved unfounded as the blaze, which firefighters say reached more than 1,000C, swelled steel joists and turned mortar to powder.

Det Insp Adrian Todd, of Kidderminster Police, said: "We are currently treating the cause of this fire as suspicious and fire investigation officers, together with forensic investigators, are assisting us with our investigation."

In all, six tenders and five support vehicles were called to the fire which a spokesman for the fire service said "completely destroyed" the building.

The West Mercia police force helicopter was also scrambled in the initial hunt for the occupants which also saw officers carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.

Kidderminster police are appealing to members of the public who may have been near the scene and witnessed something, or anyone with any information, to contact them on 01562 820888, or telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
