FOLLOWING your recent correspondence regarding volunteers I would like to add my own little story about the Cotswold wardens.
I recently offered them a large piece of Cotswold stone from my garden to be used for repairing one of the many broken stiles. Six men duly arrived, all over 50, and armed with ropes and wooden supports. They spent three hours, without even stopping for my offered coffee break, manoeuvring this half-ton piece of rock down my garden, and then having to up-end it through my garage. There was no damage to my lawn during this mammoth feat and I was full of admiration for these men who give so much of their time freely to keep our footpaths and stiles as we would wish them to be. This is just another example of the work done behind the scenes in so many areas of life, which most of us remain unaware of unless we have personal experience of it. So three cheers for the volunteers.
