ACCORDING to a letter from the Department of Environment, over the last 12 months the 11 existing municipal incinerators between them exceeded the limits set for emissions a total of 146 times.
This does not give me much confidence or assurance as to the statements made in favour of such plants that emissions are tightly controlled and monitored.
The letter also confirmed an alleged situation where one authority used ash from such a plant for paths in parks and allotments, which was later apparently found to be contaminated with dioxin.
So there is obviously a risk from the ash produced and that has to be transported from the site.
One hundred per cent assurance could surely never be given, that an accident or event generating contamination over an area from emissions or waste would never happen, only a level of probability that it would be unlikely to.
Any risk is unacceptable - especially so close to town and such a high concentration of housing.
If an incinerator must be built it would suggest the only acceptable location would be well away from any populated area.
