WEDNESDAY CLUB: A really colourful afternoon was spent by 33 members in King Georges Hall on June 6 to hear a talk about the proud and ancient Order of the Garter, or to be more exact, The most Noble order of the Garter, which as every school child knows, has something to do with the loss, by a lady at Court, of her garter, and which invited the disapproval of the Monarch, with the comment, 'Honi Soit qui mal-y pense'. Each year there is at Windsor, a procession by the holders of the Order, between the Castle and St Georges Chapel, where a ceremony was held. The Speaker was Mrs Angela Panrucker, of Cheltenham, whose interests are of an histroical bent. Angela, has been so enthusiastic about this, that she has been diligent enough to have obtained tickets to view the proceedings from authorised vantage points, between the two locations on over a dozen occasions. Not only have her visits enthralled and thrilled her, but she has recorded what she saw on transparencies since the processions comprises of several 'sections' besides the Members of the Order, there is the Military Band, the Heralds and so on, all in their ancient and gorgeous finery. Club members were shown several photographs, relating to the talk. Besides the sheer historical interests of the yearly procession, there is the fascination of seeing with luck, the Queen, Queen Mother, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, a handful of ex-Prime Ministers, go back several years. How lucky we are to be British and to enjoy the sight of such a colourful occasion, which is so very unusual. Patriotism fills the British breast. Mr Brian Lancaster gave the vote of thanks for a delightful afternoons talk.
