HERITAGE AND HISTORY SOCIETY: Our next outing on July 15 takes us to the southern Cotswolds and two completely contrasting properties. In the morning we visit Woodchester, one of the most intriguing houses in the country. Begun with a flourish on a grand scale in 1856, the house was abandoned, incomplete, in 1870 but now offers a unique insight into traditional building techniques. The afternoon I spent at Chevenage, near Tetbury a fascinating Elizabethan house of mellow, grey Cotswold stone whose approach is virtually unchanged since 1576. The house contains many relics of the Cromwellian era, interesting rooms and fine tapestries, furniture and pictures. A guided tour of both properties has been arranged and the cost which includes this, the coach, and admission to both houses is just £16. Both members and non-members are welcome and if this outing is anything like the May event is will be another perfect day. For further information and booking form please contact Julian Palfrey, our Volunteer Tour Organiser on 01386 561198.
