THOSE who had to endure the monsoon conditions in the morning were at a distinct disadvantage to those who enjoyed a relatively balmy afternoon at Broadway's Men's Invitation.
Not surprisingly, the bulk of the good scores came from the post lunch pairings.
Normally, a net score of 64 against the par of 72 would put you firmly among the prizes. However, only one such score, that of Tony Holt and Jeremy Holt, managed to scrape into fourth place courtesy of a back nine of 29.
A posse of other pairings also on net 64 were left to rue the odd missed putt, errant chip or outright shank.
Third place went to captain elect Richard Rouse and his guest, T Kendall, with a net 62 who were just beaten out of second spot, again on countback, by Jim Porter and Pete Richards.
First place, with a breathtaking net 59, went to Mark Stedman and Steve Locke playing off nine and 11 respectively. It was a particularly satisfying result for Stedman who recently endured a harrowing experience in the Alexander Foursomes knockout competition.
Best gross was won by the consistent Steve Griffin who was partnered by ex-Broadway member Tony Hedley.
The best front nine went to George Sloggett and David Osdorne (net 29), while Chubb Campbell and Simon Long won the best back nine with the same score.
At the prize giving, club captain Brian Wright informed the gathered throng that the invitation competition is the only event when you play to your handicap and come last. With such fine scoring he wasn't joking!
Asplendid day was thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part and were privileged to play on a course in fine condition.
