I DO not know whether N Taylor's support for fairer, more proportional voting system represents a long-standing principled conviction, or stems from a sudden realisation that such a system would give the UK Independence Party some chance of electoral success (You Say, June 16).
No matter. He is right to say that democracy will be better served by a voting system that ensures that the degree of support at the ballot box translates more effectively into numbers of elected representatives.
The best way forward would be to implement the Jenkins Report on electoral reform for Westminster, and introduce PR for local council elections.
