TWO Malvern women awarded MBE honours cracked open a bottle of champagne and celebrated together this week.

Jennette Davy and Sheila Young were both given the award in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Coun Davy won the award for services to the community of Malvern and Mrs Young for services to the town's Citizens' Advice Bureau.

Coun Davy said that when she got the letter back in May she thought it was a mistake.

"I kept looking at the name and address. I assumed it must have been sent to the wrong house. When it sank in, I was absolutely delighted."

She has been heavily involved in numerous community groups, including the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, Langland Community Association, Community Action, Langland Lions sports club and Malvern Hills College. She also helped found Malvern Hills CAB and has served on town, district and county councils.

Mrs Young has been working at Malvern CAB since it opened in 1973, specialising in debt counselling.

She said: "I would not have had this award if it were not for my manager, Liz Pusey, and all who work at the CAB. My husband's support has been essential as well."

In September she was named the CAB's volunteer of the year, and she has accepted an invitation to a Buckingham Palace garden party next month.
