A U-TURN in council car park policy at Newtown Road has been hailed as a victory by a Link Top resident.
Malvern Hills District Council installed ticket machines in the road's two car parks a fortnight ago, angering local traders and residents. Shopkeepers feared customers would stop shopping there if they had to pay to park.
Resident Ron Harris launched a campaign against the charges, which he said encouraged street parking and congestion, making the road dangerous for pedestrians.
At a meeting of the Executive Board on Tuesday night, councillors agreed to allow overnight parking for residents at a cost of £100 per annum.
Mr Harris said the decision was "a victory".
"But it's still no good for the shops whose takings have shown a severe loss," he said.
"I'd like to see a 15-minute free parking clause put in for the daytime."
Coun Graham Myatt said he was sure residents would welcome the change but would like the council to reconsider the overall effects of introducing charges such as increased parking on the streets.
