One of their finest hours
THIS month marks the 300th anniversary of the formation of the Worcestershire Regiment which, alas, no longer survives as a separate military unit in its own right.
In this week of 1951, the Journal reported: "The Worcestershire Regiment is about to celebrate its 250th anniversary. The Royal Warrant which authorised Viscount Charlemont to raise his Regiment of Foot and the 2nd Battalion, the Worcestershire Regiment was dated June 28, 1701.
"Unfortunately, with the 1st Battalion and Band currently away in Malaya, it is not possible to celebrate the anniversary in the way the Regiment would wish. The Colonel of the Regiment, Lt Gen. Sir Richard Gale has, however, arranged that a short service of thanksgiving shall be held in the St George's Chapel of Worcester Cathedral."
