WE would like to encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of a wonderful new Help the Aged scheme, which is offering the over 55s cash and expert support to tackle issues in their town, village or street.

Grants of up to £5,000 for individuals and £10,000 for joint applications (up to three people) are available for an enormous range of project ideas.

For example, if you're fed up with the local transport, it could be a scheme to lobby local transport companies? Or what about a project to clean up the streets, a scheme to improve a local green area, or even a project to help the housebound.

The scheme, called the Citizen's Action Millennium Awards, and funded by the Millennium Commission, really does have the potential to have an enormous impact on both the lives of those involved and their local communities.

With two types of awards to choose from, there's something for everyone.

The Active Citizen Award is looking for individuals who would like to tackle local issues but would like practical support - including tailored learning programmes, ICT and internet training - to run the project successfully.

To find out more or to receive a free leaflet just call the Awards Hotline on tel: 0870 7703280 or e-mail: cama@helptheaged.org.uk
