A CYCLIST has been killed on a Worcestershire road - months before a bypass was due to be built.

The man was involved in a collision with an articulated lorry at Wyre Hill, Worcester Road, Wyre Piddle, last night. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened around 9.45pm when the victim was riding a Raleigh trail pedal cycle. He was in collision with a green Volvo goods articulated lorry, which was pulling a trailer.

As the Evening News went to press, Worcester police was not releasing any more details about the victim, but urged witnesses to contact PC Ali Bussey on 01905 723888.

The Wyre Piddle bypass is set to be built in February next year and archaeological surveys have begun on the site.

Mid Worcestershire MP Peter Luff, who has campaigned for the bypass, said that it was a tragedy the villagers had to wait more than 20 years for the road.

"It's what all of us have been saying. It's tragic it wasn't built sooner," said Mr Luff.

"Even if it had been built a couple of years sooner, then this individual might not have died.

"I've said consistently that there would be more deaths if a bypass wasn't built and I don't like to be proved right.

"When you have a large volume of heavy goods vehicles going on a narrow road system like in the village, accidents are inevitable."
