A ROAD scheme designed to improve the safety of Worcester schoolchildren could be introduced to two more city schools.

People living in areas around Bishop Perowne CE High School, in Merriman's Hill, and St Barnabas CE Primary, based in Green Lane, are to be consulted about the proposals to cut traffic and improve safety.

The Safer Routes To School initiative, which is a partnership between Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council, would introduce 20mph speed limits and other traffic-calming measures.

The scheme has already been earmarked for Red Hill CE Primary, but Battenhall residents are fighting the plans.

Householders around Gorse Hill Primary School and Elgar High School have also been consulted about the initiative in their areas.

Preliminary proposals have been prepared for the latest scheme and these will be displayed to the public this week. As well as viewing the plans, local residents are encouraged to ask questions.

Peter Warner, the headteacher at Bishop Perowne, has been working with the city council for 18 months to try and implement the scheme.

"We're hoping it will get the support of the local residents," he said.

"We've been concerned for a long period of time about students travelling to and from school.

"There was an accident here just a few weeks ago where a car ended up in our field. Luckily it wasn't during school time.

"We're concerned there may be a serious accident if things aren't done soon."

The aim of the Safer Routes To School initiative is to improve the safety of the school journey for walkers and cyclists, encouraging people out of their cars.

Worcester MP Mike Foster says that residents should back the scheme as it is in everyone's interests.

The plans were due to be on display at Bishop Perowne today from 4-6pm and on Thursday, from 6-8pm. There will also be displays at St Barnabas on Wednesday from 2.30-5.30pm.
