HISTORY came alive at Witley Court when head gardener Richard Squires gave tours around the grounds and gardens.
Included in the tour of the ruined Italianate 19th Century mansion were the Ornamental Walk and the remains of the Victorian parterres that will soon be restored.
The work of great landscape designer, William Andrew Nesfield, whose immense stone fountains are a famous feature of the ground, was discussed, as were restoration projects by English Heritage.
Further tours will take place on Sunday, July 15, and Sunday, September 30, priced £5 for adults, £3.50 for concessions, £2.50 for children and free for English Heritage members.
