THE provision of bins for composting garden and vegetable waste is an excellent scheme but when installing on soft ground a precaution that should be taken - but rarely mentioned - is to prevent harbouring rodents who work from below. This is easily achieved by standing the bin on a piece of fine mesh chicken wire.
The council's pest officers do an excellent job but do not need additional rodent infestations to deal with, especially in the confines of gardens where the proximity of domestic pets make the task more difficult.
