SO Worcester's High Street is "tired out", (Evening News, June 22). It should be kept in good repair, but personally, I rather like the High Street as it is - cluttered.

But it's not as cluttered as in the days when the present pedestrian precinct was the city's main artery with vans, lorries, cars, buses, whatever, belching out pollutants.

Of course, not everything is good. There are far too many pigeons. Their droppings get everywhere. It's time for a humane cull for these somewhat malnourished creatures. Hygiene is important.

I like a bit of greenery, so please, please leave the trees alone. We could do with more seats to accommodate workers from the surrounding shops and offices taking a lunch break and the elderly seeking a rest. Phone boxes are still needed for those who cannot assimilate the new technology.

Reference was made to information signs being "scraped" by bicycles. Bicycles should not be ridden in pedestrian precincts. Sooner or later some undisciplined young idiot, weaving in and out like a madman, is going to cause a serious accident.

Fly posters and graffiti maniacs should, of course, be severely dealt with. Alas these days, the police always seem to be conspicuous by their absence.

I am neither a motorist nor cyclist. However I suggest a little less police time should be spent chasing motorists and a little more spent chasing cyclists.

Apart from pedestrianised areas, in other areas of the city these cyclists should remember that pavements are not cycle tracks.

D E MARGRETT,

Worcester.
