JUNE 23 should have been the day Staunton & Corse Carnival was held. But the colourful event had to be postponed due to the foot and mouth epidemic until September 1.
Unlike last year, when the show was hit by the weather, this year would have been perfect and now all hopes are on the later date.
This will be the 25th annual event, which began in 1976 and for 19 years was known as "Staunton in June", comprising of a two or three-day festival of flowers in Staunton Parish Church with a different theme every year, a fete in the church field. For some years, refreshments including morning coffee, lunches and teas were served in Staunton Court by kind permission of the late Mr Jerry Hawkins. Some years, gardens in the parish were also open or painting exhibitions or some other attraction were included. There was, and still is, an Exemption Dog Show organised by Miss Lesley Watts. The event originally started when money had to be raised for Staunton Church spire, which was found to be in danger of collapse and 13 courses had to be removed immediately. Eventually, some £27,000 (with some grants) was raised. It had taken ten years to raise the money and have the spire rebuilt and it was a great day when the gleaming gold weather vane was put back on the top of the spire by the steeplejacks. With ever increasing costs for the running and upkeep of the church it has been found necessary to continue with the annual event which is the church's main fundraiser.
About five years ago with Mr Brian Lewis, as chairman the show, became more spectacular and ambitious and, with Brian and now Mrs Liz Morgan as chairman, it continues to be so with a circus theme this year. Fortunately, Liz was able to re-book almost everything for the new date and, with the help of a splendid committee, hope for another successful day.
For several years now donations have been made to various organisations in the parish.
