EVERYTHING one would expect to find at a village church fete, on a perfect English summer day, was there at Upleadon Church Fete, held in the lovely garden of the Old Vicarage. Plenty of parishioners patronising the very well-laden stalls.
The fete was opened by Mr Gerald Draper, lay chairman of the PCC when the Rev Pat Phillips was unavoidably delayed and arrived later. Mr Draper presented a bouquet to Mrs Stewart and thanked her and her husband for giving them the use of their garden.
Pride of place was given to the two wall hangings on display, which had been created by parishioners to mark the Millennium. Cakes, produce, plants, a terrific stall of bric-a-brac, jewellery and scarves, several tombolas, raffle, games for the children and skittles were all laid out around the lawn and there were lovely teas with strawberries and cream. Mr Stewart was busy with the barbecue.
Junior and sixth-form girls from the Croft School, Stratford-on-Avon, gave a splendid display of country dancing, under the direction of Mrs Diana Jaggard, who gamely, although suffering a damaged knee, took part as their tutor. All proceeds are for Upleadon Church.
