The telephone system is increasing throughout the town and during the week an enormous pole was placed in position at the rear of the Beauchamp Hotel. The work was by no means easy to accomplish considering the size and weight of the pole but it was erected without a hitch, although at first glance the task set the men appeared a difficult one indeed. Loitering at church entrances is a thing that is becoming too prevalent. There is nothing worse than to see a lot of loafers hanging round a church door and making remarks about those who are going to worship. For loitering near Bosbury Church entrance, contrary to the bylaws, Philip John Foster and Joseph Foster, both of Bosbury, had to appear before the magistrates. Ledbury Free Press, July 2, 1901.
50 YEARS AGO
Over 600 people supported the "Rose Revels" at the annual fete organised by the parish of St Matthias', Malvern Link, and as a result, more than £220 was raised toward the annual instalment, which the parish repays off the loan received for the purchase of Durban House. Malvern Gazette, June 29, 1951.
All who admire Ledbury Parish Church, whether churchgoers or not, will be glad to hear that the job of renovating the bells in the famous detached Norman tower started this week. I believe that about £930 of the £1,700 necessary for the renovation has already been received. Ledbury Reporter, June 29, 1951.
25 YEARS AGO
Residents of Longdon, near Upton-upon-Severn, are angry because their wires have been cut. They have signed a petition demanding the return of the village's only public phone box, removed by the Post Office without warning several weeks ago. Malvern Gazette, July 1, 1976.
David Steel paid a flying visit to Ledbury on Saturday, as part of his campaign for the leadership of the Liberal Party. In a question and answer session in a room over the Market Hall, he said he was greatly heartened by the strength of the Liberal Associations which he had found on his tour. Ledbury Reporter, June 1, 1976.
