A CONTRIBUTORY factor in Manor Park Men's D Team's first victory of the season over Evesham D was an inspirational last minute tactical suggestion by one of the team members, Brendan Lawler.
It worked and although rubbers were even, as were sets, Manor Park won on games won. Ian Elias & Colin Weedon won 6-0, 6-1 and lost 6-7, 5-7, Brendan Lawler & Steven Bamford won 6-2, 70-5 and 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 and Michael Lane & Michael Taylor lost 1-6, 0-6 and 6-7, 6-3, 4-6 with four net calls in the final set against them.
On Sunday they entertained Fladbury A, this time they featured in a draw 3-3 but lost on sets. Ian Elias & Colin Weedon won 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 and lost 1-6, 2-6, Steve James & Steve Bamford won 6-3, 6-4 losing 0-6, 0-6 with Michael Lane & Barney White losing 1-6, 2-6 and winning 6-2, 6-1.
Team members are reminded that practice will take place on Sunday mornings starting July 2.
MATHON, Cradley & Storridge Tennis Club (MCS) Ladies A team were in fine form on Saturday beating the visiting Whitecross team by four rubbers to nil.
Janet Brown & Sonia Sanderson won 6-4, 6-2 and 7-5, 7-5. The second MCS pair of Amanda Godsland & Christine Brandon-White won 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-3.
The Men's MCS B team travelled to Madley and came away with a hard earned draw. Duncan Hannaford, returning to league tennis after injury, partnered Phil Toghill and after losing the first rubber 3-6, 2-6, came back strongly in their second game to win 6-1, 6-0.
The other MCS pair of Paul Grubb & Chris Brandon-White also lost their first match 3-6, 2-6 before winning the final rubber 7-6, 6-4 to secure the draw.
The MCS Men's A team gained a draw at home to Leominster Tennis Club. The highlight of the match was when James Plant & Mark Kavenagh saved a match point to Leominster before winning the final rubber 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 to gain a draw.
NANCY Zhang won the U12 Robinson's Aces Tournament and goes forward to the County Tournament in September.
Nancy comes from China but is now resident in Malvern, a member of Manor Park Club and a pupil at Malvern Girls College.
The Boys event was won by Steven Aston from Fladbury who beat Pershore Junior Ben Brown in the final. Manor Park players, Ben Marks and Richard Tuck, came unstuck in the semi-finals.
