A DRUNKEN teenager who kicked a man's head "like a football" outside a Worcester nightclub has been sent to detention for nine months.

Jason Day had drunk eight pints of strong lager before the incident outside The Torch nightclub in St John's, Worcester Crown Court heard.

His victim, Peter Sangway, suffered a depressed fracture of a cheekbone, a broken jaw and lost a tooth.

Day, aged 19, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm.

John Edwards, prosecuting, said witnesses saw Day punch his victim four or five times as well as kicking him in the face "like a football" before walking off. He was not arrested until eight months later.

Day, of Drake Avenue, Dines Green, Worcester, told police that he regularly lost his temper when he had too much to drink.

His barrister, John Butterfield, said Day had since modified his behaviour and no longer visited nightclubs.

The only time he went out was with his mother and father.

On the night of the incident, he feared he was going to be attacked and was so scared that at one point he hid beneath a car.

He realised he had made a big mistake in launching the attack and had shown genuine remorse.

Day had obtained a job, first as a packer and then as a machine operator.

His fiance had suffered a miscarriage but he intended to settle down with her.

Judge John Cavell said the assault was so serious that custody was the only sentence. Day's victim had to undergo an operation to repair his face injury.
