NORTHFIELD angler Mick Taylor is continuing his good run in the Starlets Veterans contests.
And on Tuesday, club secretary Mick took the top honours when they fished at Worcester's Howford Fishery' by pole fishing casters at Middle Pool Peer for 22-15-0 of chub. Close on his heels was Ray Pugmore (Northfield) with 21-2-0, third John Grazier (Stoke Prior) 17-6-0.
The annual Match Angling Plus Classic took place at Moorlands Farm. Fished over two four-hour matches on points, with Barry Gannon (Fishermans Way) collecting the top £700 prize for his two points total, 80-11-0 am and 119-2-0 pm, giving him 199-13-0. Runner-up was Dave Hinton (Map Starlets) also two points but with a total weight of 178-14-0 and third place going to Les Thompson (D.C. Lifeshyle), again two points and 150-6-0 total.
The 55 anglers taking part put 3020 pounds of fish on the scales -- phew!
Wednesday's Moorlands Farm Open was held on The Bank and Moors Pools and was won by Gavin Daley (WB Clarke) who pole fished corn and meat at bank peg 24 for 61-11-0. Second Bob Jones (Moorlands) 38-13-0, third Dave Bradford (Beechdale MG) 36-6-0.
Astwood Fisheries Bluebell Pool Open proved hard for most, with Jim Kearley (Weoley Castle) taking a modest top catch 26-1-0 from under the cover of the willows on the island from peg 13. Brian Williams (Astwood) had a late surge with a second placed 21-7-0, third John Worral (Moseley) 21-5-0.
The Starlets Veterans Thursday contest was at Beoley's Haye Farms Curtis Pool where local star Stan James (Beoley) pole fished meat up in the water at peg 12 for 17-3-0. Second Barry Hickman (Bromsgrove) 15-2-0, third Albert Putnam (Quinton) 10-8-0.
On Friday afternoon The Woodlands View Open was won by Chris Robson (AOK) by alternating corn and meat on the pole at Deans Pool peg 10 for 87-14-0, third Mat Cox (Tromans) 72-4-0.
It was a sad day on Saturday when the once prestigous Argus Club Masters came to an end. In its heyday, over 100 clubs entered their club champions into this annual event. But alas, the decline of fishing on its home, the River Avon at Hampton Ferry, Evesham saw numbers dwindle to just 18 this year. Again the river was in a dour mood, with winner, Northfields Bill Hateley (Girling AC) taking just a few tiddlers for the majority of the match. With minutes to go he found a bonus pound plus chub with stick float fished maggots from peg 31 for a 1-14-8 total. Yours truly Tony Brunn, fishing for Telfish AC, had to settle for the runners up spot with 1-6-0, third Rob Swain (Birmingham Airport AC) 0-7-12.
The Lucas National Team Championships saw 12 teams of eight battle it out at Poole Hall Fishers and Great King Street, after five years of continuous runners up places, finally made it with a 34 point tally. Lucas Bryce A were second with 40.5, third YUASA with 43.5.
Top individual was Birmingham's Mick Edwards (Fordhouses A), who feederfished maggots at Heron Pool peg 55 for a modest 22-13-0 of carp. Second James Robins (Shaftsmoor Lane) 13-2-0, third Martin Thorpe (YUASA) 10-12-0.
At Moorlands Farm, The Meadow Pool Open was topped by Les Thompson (DC Lifestyle) with a pole and worm catch of 90-14-0 from peg 12. Second Nicholas Rich (Fosters MG) 85-1-0, third Jason Neath (Shakespeare) 80-1-0.
The Evening Moors Pool Open was a close event with Aaron Munslow (DC Lifestyle) taking the verdict with a pole, corn and meat catch of 114-9-0 from peg 17. Second Mick Henshall (Fosters MG) 112-6-0, third Clive Munslow (Preston Innovations) 84-9-0.
On Sunday the 100 AC fished its second bye contest at Uckinghall Pool near Tewkesbury, with Bromsgrove top rod Tony Delves taking the honours by pole fishing chopped worms at peg 34 on the point for 12-11-0 of bream. Club chairman Steve Marke was second with 7-1-12, third Stuart Cutler 5-10-12.
At Wyre Forest Fishery, Furnace Mill, the Furnace and Mucky Meadow Pools Open was won by Matt McDermott (Stevens Tackle) with 46-4-0 taken with pole peg 44. Second Andy Newton (DC Lifestyle) 40-2-0, third Ken Watson (DC Lifestyle) 36-8-0.
At Woodland View Jim Smith (Fosters MG) was the winner of the Arves and Deans Pools Open by pole fishing worms at Deans peg 16 for 65-12-0. Second Wayne Mellings (Fosters MG) 50-14-0, third Rob Grandley (Shakespeare) 45-12-0.
The Evening Open was held on the same pools, with Paul Newman taking a huge 154-0-0 carp haul by pole fishing meat up in the water at Deans peg 31. Second Colin Wedgebrow (Slapheads) 97-3-0, third Chris Hill (Fosters MG) 86-1-0.
John Mottershead (Trentside) was the man of the moment at Moorlands Farm by taking a double victory in the daytime and evening events. John pole fished worms at Meadow Pool peg 31 for 88-6-0 and then 101-1-0 at peg 12 in the evening. Neil McKinnon (Shakespeare) took second place in the day match with 69-3-0, third Colin Pace (Bilston) 45-2-0. Neville Groves (Walsall) was second in the evening with 70-2-0, third Bob Jones (Moorlands) 62-12-0.
Trout returns for Silligrove Fishery in the Wyre Forest show: Pete Walker from Dudley had five Rainbows, taken on a Damsal Nymph with fish up to just under eight pounds. Kevin Ludlow, from Knighton on Teme, had seven Rainbows to Davvies dry flies, the best at seven pounds.
