Redditch Arrows almost pulled off one of the surprises of the season when they narrowly lost 26-12 to second-ranked East Kilbride Pirates.
Going into the game as firm underdogs, Arrows shocked their visitors by taking an early lead, Pete Morgan rounding off a move by touching down from four yards.
The Pirates levelled when an 80-yard drive was finished by Steve Branscombe.
The Arrows immediately hit back and, after good play from Anthony Perkins, veteran Ron Gifford's 11-yard reception put Arrows 12-6 ahead.
A Willie Brown 42-yard rush and a successful 2 point PAT gave the visitors a narrow half-time lead and the second half saw the Pirates gradually take control.
A 60-yard punt return from Ian Brown extended the lead to 20-12 but East Kilbride needed to defend well to stop the Arrows from reducing the lead.
Having to move the ball 80 yards to tie the scores, the Arrows were having to attempt big plays.
Unfortunately a strong blitz from the Pirates forced the Arrows QB to pop the ball into the air and see it drop into the arms of a Pirates defender who returned it to the Arrows one-yard line from where Gary McNey's QB sneak completed the scoring.
Despite the result, the Arrows must take great credit for their contribution.
For the majority of the game they matched the Pirates play for play and the result was in doubt right up to the final two minutes.
Everyone played to their best and considering the quality of their opponents, (who in effect are the Scottish national side and have several GB international and ex-Scottish Claymore players in the team) can take great pride in their performance.
