I FIND it difficult to feel sorry for the young Hereford couple who mistook Italy for Spain.
If you take a look at Ryanair's website you will see that they don't have any flights to Spain - they do, however, fly to Perpignan, which is just across the border in France.
However, if this couple couldn't find one of the thousands of friendly Genoese to point them in the direction of one of the many beaches within 25-30 minutes of Genoa, a delightful seaport on the coast of the Mediterranean, then I hardly think they would have found a train to the Costa Brava.
Had they taken the trouble to talk to the tourist office in Genoa - or a hotel or a bus terminal, they would have found that they were in a wonderful location for a short break.
Gerona, by the way, is well inland from the coast and houses several industrial estates, a small airport, plus the Salvador Dali Museum which, incidentally, is well worth a visit.
This is yet another case of the Englishman abroad - stubbornly assuming that everyone else can learn English!
