PART of the woodwork in the roof was damaged when fire broke out at Wythall Police Station on Monday afternoon.
It is believed that painters who were decorating the building and removing paint with a blow lamp inadvertently set fire to a bird's nest in the eves.
The flames quickly spread to the timbered roof but more severe damage was prevented by the intervention of Redditch and Birmingham fire brigades.
A water tanker and a wireless car turned out from Redditch station.
