NURSES at the hospital which serves Bromsgrove have been unable to go home at the end of their shifts because there is no one to take their place, health watchdogs have claimed.
Members of Bromsgrove and Redditch Community Health Council (CHC) heard at their meeting last Wednesday, June 27, that recruitment and retention of staff at Redditch's Alexandra Hospital remained a problem.
CHC chairman Rev Andrew Smith said nurses told him they had to work double shifts because Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, had no-one available to relieve them.
He said: "I am still yet to be convinced that the acute trust is a credible recruiter."
Steve Onions, from the trust, said once the latest group of nurses from the Philippines were in place, the shortfall across the county would only be 30 to 40 in the context of a very large staff.
He said the shortage of nurses was a national problem but it was much worse in other areas.
