BRIDGE CLUB: The club made their annual awards on June 25, at the summer party. The duplicate Championship Pairs were hotly contested this year and last year's winners, David Sheerin and Colin Payne, only clung on to their title by a slender margin, having to fight off strong challenges from the next two pairs of Pat Sparrow partnering Jeff Jones and Jessie Willetts with Des Richards. Mention must also be made of Anne and Richard Preece who were leading the field but failed to play sufficient games to qualify. Pat and Jeff had some consolation by winning the handicap trophy from Marian Morris partnering Roger Cooke and the partnership of Jessie and Des, all three pairs producing storming improvements over last year's season. Finally, Phil Thomas took home the Chicago champion's trophy, pushing last year's winner, Marian Morris, into second place. All this bodes well for next year's events and the club is looking healthy from both a social and competitive standpoint.
