TOP names from the world of music and the arts will be appearing at the Ross International Festival in August.

For the sixth year running, the giant marquee will rise from the riverside meadows and play host to some of entertainment's biggest stars by the banks of the Wye.

Heading the list from the world of rock and pop are regular visitor Van Morrison and Joan Armatrading, who was so taken with last year's event she immediately decided to return.

Lulu, Midge Ure, Eddi Reader, the Bluetones, Feeder and Atomic Kitten will also be playing.

Popular jazz singer Stacey Kent is making an appearance, while Billie Jo Spears represents country music, and the Blind Boys of Alabama, Alex Wilson's Anglo-Cuban band and the Master Drummers of Africa bring sounds of the world to Ross.

For the first time, the festival includes opera, with Mid Wales Opera putting on La Traviata, and the BBC's choir of the year, Cantamus, also performing.

The festival has a strong dance element as well, with De Lunares Flamenco and Senza Tempo Dance from Spain, Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company from India, Birmingham Royal Ballet and the National Dance Company of Ireland.

Roy Hattersley, Alistair McGowan, Gareth Owen and Richard D North are among those who are taking part in talks and discussion, and there will be comedy from Harry Hill, Junior Simpson and Supergirly.

Festival director Helen Wragg said: "Our aim is to present the best of dance, comedy, music, plays, talks and family entertainment and I'm delighted to be able to bring world class talent to Ross-on-Wye."

Last year, 36,000 people visited the festival, and organisers hope this year's event from August 16 to 27, will top that.
