THE Malvern Gazette of 25 years ago had the sad duty of reporting the closure of the Fermor Arms, a "popular little pub" in Church Street.
The Fermor, a pub since 1815 and often known as the Hole in the Wall, was one of a block of properties fated for demolition. It was replaced with the row of shops which currently contains an off-licence and shoe shop, between what is now the Oxfam Shop and the Lyttelton Well.
According to the Gazette: "The regulars turned out in force for the final night and towards closing time, with all but one of the beer pumps dry, engaged in a bit of a sing-song led, in good voice as ever, by Daisy, wife of landlord Wally Jones, who have been hosts at the Fermor for over 15 years."
The Joneses were not retiring from the licensed trade; the following week they took over The Bakery in Malvern Link.
