A NEW easier access path in the Malvern Hills should ensure panoramic views for everyone.

The route, which begins in town at Black Hill, Jubilee Drive, is due to be officially opened on Friday by Simon Barnes, head of fund-raising and communications for Spinal Research.

Wheelchair users, people with walking difficulties or even families with pushchairs can all now reach the ridge and enjoy spectacular views from it.

The 300-metre pathway project originally began in 1998 when the Conservators set up a Disabled Access Working Party.

With input from local wheelchair users, plans were completed in the summer of 2000 and construction began in January.

An appeal to help fund the scheme was launched in June and various coffee mornings, garden parties, variety shows and donations from local organisations helped raised the total.

Grants from The Richard Cadbury Charitable Trust, E F Bulmer Benevolent Fund, CLA Charitable Trust and the Mercia Environmental Fund helped to raise £10,000, with £8,000 coming from the Conservators' general funds.

"I recommend this easier access path to all our visitors," said John Tretheway, chairman of the Conservators' public relations committee.

"It's the first of its kind purposely constructed on the hills and commons, which I hope will be one of many that will add to the quality of visiting the Malverns.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions to the appeal which enabled this worthwhile project to become a reality."

Owing to the foot-and-mouth outbreak the official opening was delayed, but people are already gaining pleasure from the path.

After the hard work involved, the teams now hope this ceremony will persuade the Worcestershire public back into the countryside.

The cutting of the ribbon is at 11.30am.
