THE mother of Lockerbie victim Helga Mosey said she feels "tremendous sorrow" for the bomber who killed her daughter and who is mounting the first stage of his appeal today.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi's appeal against his conviction for mass murder was due to begin in Holland at Camp Zeist, near Utrecht.

The 49-year-old was jailed for life in January after being convicted of mass murder after bombing Pan Am Flight 103 in December 1988. His co-accused, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah, was acquitted.

A total of 270 people died - 259 passengers and crew and 11 on the ground.

Elizabeth Mosey, of Cradley, near Malvern, whose 19-year-old daughter was on board, said she was extremely relieved that the legal process was running its course.

"I feel quite detached from the whole thing although I'm very relieved things are progressing," said Mrs Mosey. "Despite what happened I feel such sorrow for the bomber and for what he now faces."
