MORE than 50,000 workers will be needed to meet building demand in the Midlands over the next five years, according to the National Federation of Builders.

The building industry is experiencing a shortage of recruits, says the federation, and so a national campaign to boost recruitment will start today to coincide with National Construction Week.

The National Federation of Builders, which is one of the biggest and oldest trade organisations in the country, will participate in training and career days with some of its 4,000 member companies and other organisations throughout the week.

Regional director at the federation's Midlands Business Centre, Paul Thomas, said National Construction Week was an ideal opportunity for the industry in the Midlands to join forces and promote the positive aspects of construction.

"Throughout the week, a series of activities has been planned to engage schools, colleges and university graduates in the region to support an industry offering excellent career opportunities," he said.

Free events are planned for Birmingham (phone 0845 7585673), Wolverhampton (phone 01902 405504), Telford (phone 01746 762657) and Coventry (phone 024 7688 8963).
