A Bromsgrove taxi driver had his cab rammed by an angry motorist as he dropped four customers off at a club.

Anthony Moody told a jury at Worcester Crown Court he was parked up at 11pm when he heard a loud revving from the club's car park.

As passenger Darren Hodgkiss closed the taxi door outside the Marlgrove Club in Catshill, Mr Moody spotted a Vauxhall Vectra speeding towards him.

"I thought the car would run him over but he jumped out of the way," he told the jury.

"I then heard metal bending, glass smashing and Darren screaming."

Stephen Cadwaladr, prosecuting, alleged the Vauxhall's driver Neil Sheldrake flew into a rage after being refused entry to the club because he was wearing unsuitable clothes.

He said impatient Sheldrake tried to drive his car through a gap between the taxi and the car park entrance "at a rate of knots" but failed.

Mr Hodgkiss was thrown onto the ground and suffered stomach and rib injuries. But he was not seriously hurt.

Sheldrake was said to have driven off without stopping to find out how the injured man was.

The 29-year-old from Shenley Fields Road, Weoley Castle, Birmingham, denies dangerous driving on December 16 last year.

Mr Moody, a taxi driver for 12 years, described how he dropped Mr Hodgkiss - whom he knew - his girlfriend and two other girls off at the club.

The Vauxhall's lights began to flash and he could hear the engine racing before the impact.

The smash caused £1,100 damage and he was unable to work until February because he had to wait for car repairs.

Mr Cadwaladr said Sheldrake and his brother were refused entry to the club because they were wearing tracksuit trousers.

"He lost his rag and started shouting the odds in temper," he said. "When he went back to the car park he was still in a temper. He couldn't wait for the taxi to move and shot past, not caring who he hit."

Police identified the defendant from a club security video. They traced Sheldrake to his home where they found his car with a broken window.

The trial continues.
