A SERIAL offender has been jailed by Droitwich magistrates for assaulting a police officer.

Nathan Matthias was also sent to jail for 12 other offences.

The 22-year-old's crimes date back to April this year, but he had continually jumped bail and failed to turn up to court, magistrates were told.

He was finally arrested in Malvern on Thursday, September 6.

"He ran off from the officer but was caught," said Suzanne Llewellyn, prosecuting.

"He elbowed the officer in the face, scratched him and damaged his clothes," said Mrs Llewellyn.

Matthias, of Jamaica Road, Malvern, admitted the assault.

He also admitted stealing a briefcase, rings and cash from a parked car, and stealing a bathroom cabinet from outside a Malvern store, both on Wednesday, April 4.

On Tuesday, April 17 he stole the parcel shelf from a parked Renault Clio, containing stereo speakers.

On Thursday, May 3, Matthias, a disqualified driver, was spotted by police driving a Ford Orion close to his home.

"Police saw the car reverse along the road," said Mrs Llewellyn.

"They turned around and went to speak to the driver - who gave false details.

"A pedestrian arrived and said he was the driver's father and gave the correct details.

"He was bailed to attend court but failed to attend."

He admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance.

He was found to be driving another car on Friday, June 22.

He and two others were stopped by police on the A440 Worcester road driving a Peugeot 309.

At Worcester police station he was breathalysed and found to have 92mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

The legal limit is 35mcg.

Matthias admitted taking the car without consent, driving while disqualified, driving with excess alcohol and driving without insurance.

He also admitted five bail act offences.

Magistrates sentenced him to six months imprisonment for the assault and imposed 12 other custodial sentences, totalling three years, to run concurrently.

An extra 12 months was added to his disqualification and six penalty points were added to his licence.
