THE vice-chairman of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service was on a whistlestop tour of the county today meeting volunteers.

Alice Cleland was due to call in at Bromsgrove's Princess of Wales Community Hospital, at College Precincts in Worcester, Pershore Lunch Club, and Meals on Wheels as part of her visit.

The aim was to meet and present long service awards to WRVS helpers, who have been active in supporting communities and assisting isolated older or housebound people.

The vice-chairman said the tour was part of her commitment to the welfare of the organisation's volunteers.

Fifteen helpers were due to receive awards today, including husband and wife team Jean and Rob Baston, joint organisers of the Pershore Meals on Wheels project.

Volunteer Reg Harvey was also expected to be presented with a 10-year long service award.
