THE chief instructor of a Bromsgrove-based self defence association is celebrating after receiving the martial arts world equivalent of an Oscar.

Andy Hopwood, chief instructor of the British Free Fighting Academy, was admitted to the Combat Hall of Fame for his 'commitment and devotion to the development of martial arts in the United Kingdom and around the World.'

Andy, who teaches classes across the West Midlands and runs corporate seminars across the UK, received the award at a presentation banquet at Villa Park's Holte Suite.

Renowned martial artists from across the globe were there to receive awards, including special presentations to martial artists who have overcome disabilities and life-threatening illnesses to carry on training in the sport.

Andy said: "It's a real honour to receive this award. I love teaching self defence -- seeing people's confidence grow is usually enough of an award on it's own, but to be recognised in this way is something very special."

Andy's video on street-wide self defence is on general release nationwide, entitled 'Without Warning'. The instructional self-defence video -- which Andy presents --was filmed at locations in Bromsgrove including the Merlin pub and The Ryland Centre.
