ELDERLY people living near a Malvern road could suffer serious injuries because a broken lamp-post has not been repaired for nearly five weeks, claims a furious pensioner.

John Nolan says frail and elderly people who use the footpath in Percy Walton Close are in "real danger" of having a nasty accident because Elgar Housing Association has failed to replace the lamp-post.

The lamp-post was knocked down by a car and Mr Nolan says that, despite repeated requests, the association has failed to replace it. This has left him fearing for the safety of pensioners living nearby.

Now the 65-year old, of St Andrews Road, is demanding action by the association before the dark nights draw in and a "major injury" occurs.

"It's a very dangerous situation," he said. "This is an area which has a lot of elderly people, and without the lamp-post on at night it's very difficult to see where you are going.

"What makes it worse are the trees which line the path, so it would be easy for someone to have a nasty accident.

"As the darker nights draw in someone, especially an elderly person, could trip up, or trip off a curb, or stumble over what's left of the lamp-post and that could result in a very bad injury."

Julia Daker, Press and Marketing officer at Elgar's parent company the Partnership Housing Group, apologised for the delay. She said the association was committed to the welfare of those living in the area.

"The safety of our tenants and residents alike is imperative, and Elgar Housing apologises for any delays which occurred," she said. "The lamp-post was first reported to property care on Friday, September 14. Our technician attended the site immediately and made the area safe.

"Property care acknowledge a delay occurred over the ordering of the lamp-post, but following further conversations with our contractors Pirelli, we can confirm the lamp-post will be replaced today."
