NATIONAL television crews descended on Kidderminster for a huge look-alike and tribute act awards night.

More than 100 look-alikes were in the audience along with Wyre Forest District Council officials and MP Dr Richard Taylor to see 41 live acts at the town's Mirage nightclub last Wednesday.

The night was organised by Upfront Entertainments Agency, New Road. Owner Brian Davies said: "People were coming from within a 300 mile radius and hotels were full in Kidderminster," he said.

"It's amazing - we can't cope with the amount of business at the moment. We're getting bookings for 12 months time."

He said the national look-alikes and tributes industry was now being controlled from Kidderminster, with interest from television production companies.

Thirty would-be live performers were disappointed as the schedule for the evening had been booked up months in advance.

Wolverhampton's Ollie Hughes took the Best Newcomer Award, while Mamma Mia, of Pontefract, were Tribute Act of 2001.

Dr Taylor presented the Look-alike of 2001 award to Jack Nicholson clone Meyrick Sheen, of South Wales. Celine Dion tribute Tracey Shield, from Somerset, scooped double success as Best Sound-alike and Best Overall Performer on the night.
