Setsuko Watanabe, national demonstrator, was the October speaker.

Setsuko's presentation, under the heading Turn the Pages, each creation representing one of her hobbies.

She demonstrated ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, explaining how plant material represented Heaven, Earth and mankind.

Among the accessories used was a black fire screen embroidered with blossom and birds, and two picture frames.

The varied foliage included magnolia leaves, fatsia, twisted willow, ivy, clematis seed heads, and pine cones, with flowers such as Singapore orchids, lilies, gerberas, carnations, chrysanthemums, roses and fuchsias - plus some Chinese lanterns.

At the November 7 meeting in St Mary's Chantry, Bob Harris will depict Feasting and Fantasy, at 7.30pm.

There will be a day school with Joan Peck on November 12, from 10am.
