VALE people could be risking their lives by using electric blankets that fail to meet safety standards.
Worcestershire's trading standards department says two-thirds of blankets tested in Pershore recently did not conform to European safety criteria.
Over half of those tested by officers from the department at Wychavon Civic Centre last month, were more than 10 years old, with some found to have dangerous faults that could cause a fire.
John Benjamin, trading standards project organiser, said: "It is amazing to still find so many potentially dangerous blankets being regularly used.
"The majority of blankets failed because they were over 10 years old and, therefore, did not comply with the latest safety standards, so consumers should seriously consider throwing away any electric blanket that is over 10 years old.
He said that consumers could identify older blankets by checking the label.
"Blankets carrying the old Kitemark will be more than 10 years old and we advise people to replace these with new models, which carry the BEAB mark," he added.
Trading standards' advice is to replace the blanket if the fabric is worn or frayed, if it has scorch marks or if the tapes are missing.
The blanket should also be replaced if the flex, mains lead or plug are worn or damaged, or if any connections are loose and, on no account, should people buy a second-hand blanket.
