A REVELLER found with 37 ecstasy tablets in a nightclub has been convicted of taking them in to supply others.

Steven Williams was trapped by a doorman at the Crystal Rooms in Hereford after he was spotted with a bag in his hands.

Police discovered he had two sealed bags containing ecstasy, said Gareth Walters, prosecuting at Worcester Crown Court yesterday.

A jury rejected Williams' claim that he found one of the bags on the floor of a bar.

Williams, aged 32, was convicted of possession of ecstasy with intent to supply.

Remanding him in custody while a pre-sentence report is prepared, Judge Anthony King warned that prison was inevitable.

Williams, of Portland Street, Hereford, told the court he was a heavy ecstasy user and often took up to 10 tablets a night.

That night he took seven tablets after drinking a large quantity of lager.

He admitted buying 20 tablets for £60, which he had stashed in his mother's shed. But he took them to the club because he didn't want to have them lying around.

He said he "stumbled" on the other bag of drugs and put them in his pocket. A defence witness gave evidence that he saw Williams pick up the bag from the floor.

Ian Fenny, defending, said since his arrest on November 17 last year, Williams had stopped using ecstasy but had sunk into depression.

There was no suggestion, he added, that the defendant had made profits from drug trafficking.

Williams had police cautions for drug possession and violence.
