WHAT is this fascination we have with school days? From the present day, right back through Jimmy Edwards domineering "Wake up at the back, boy" to bumbling Will Hay attempting to control a wayward class, this period is a constant source of nostalgia. And judging by the attendance for the recent Malvern Wells Players production of John Dighton's classic farce The Happiest Days of your Life, the theme is as popular as ever.
The scene is Hilary Hall, a seat of learning for boys, who unexpectedly have the pupils and teachers of St Swithins, a girls' college, foisted upon them. This meeting of the sexes leads to an ideal situation for much hilarity and the chemistry generated is not confined to the laboratory!
Val Greaves making her debut as director, had, (dare I say it) done her homework and deserves top marks for this production.
The adaptation by the cast was excellent, and Peter Ewence's set was a perfect backdrop. The Players wish to convey their thanks to Malvern Theatre Players for the loan of costumes.
Malvern Wells Players are now auditioning for the pantomime. Anybody interested should contact Chrissie Bemand on 01684 310855. Youngsters especially are required.
