A MUSIC night set up in aid of a children's charity has proved to be such a success that a special evening is soon to be held to mark raising £4,000 for the good cause.

The special live music night, called DrumBeat, runs each Wednesday at Drummonds to raise money for the National Deaf Children's Society.

Set up by Tony Gibbon, who manages successful Worcester band The Beatless, Worcester musician Jules Benjamin (pictured) and Evesham Journal editor John Murphy, the night has proved to be a rip-roaring success.

The money has been raised thanks to the free services of local bands, and the free venue provided by Drummonds owner Colin Griffin and Drummonds bar manager Stewart Whitmore, amongst others.

Everyone who has helped raise cash for the charity is being invited to the do on Wednesday, October 24.

The idea began when Tony, John and Jules trekked the Great Wall of China over nine days for the charity.

An array of live bands have graced the stage at the Worcester venue in New Street as part of the night.

Among some of the big local names who have played are Starling, Sideways Glance, The Bullfrogs, Seymour, Medford, Come together, The Benny Kravitz Experience and The Beatless.

"I try and promote as much local talent on the night as possible," said Tony. "The music can range from original bands to cover bands.

Since the night has grown into a huge success bands have been able to obtain a fee and Tony is urging more bands to come forward.

Drummonds owner Colin Griffin will be presenting the cheque to John, Tony and Jules on October 24.

Entrance is £1 and Jules will be taking to the stage.

Any bands interested in playing at Drumbeat should contact Tony on 01905 350547.
