THE Sound of Music by Worcester Operatic & Dramatic Society, has much to commend it, not least strong casting.
Becky Hasnip (Maria) sang and acted with assurance, her stature and personality suiting the part ideally. The seven von Trapp children were a delight and performed superbly, especially believable in scenes such as the thunder-storm, singing Lonely Goatherd with Maria.
Glynis Smith (Mother Abbess) had a strong, caring quality, her singing of Climb Every Mountain greatly enjoyed.
Jim Denham-Vaughn (Captain von Trapp) was very military to begin with, but loosened up as Maria's influence made an impact.
Several times, real feelings of emotion were conveyed to the audience, as when Captain von Trapp joined in singing with his children for the first time, and again when Maria returned to the family.
Lighting was effective, particularly when used to illuminate the Abbey cloisters. The excessive number of times scenery was changed seemed a hindrance - simplification of this might be considered at some future date.
John Griswold (musical director) and a small orchestra provided a sympathetic accompaniment; Liz Brownridge directed, with Chris Hooper assisting.
The show ends tomorrow (Saturday).
