Your match report on the rugby game between Malvern and Dunstablians on September 14 has been brought to our attention.
We appreciate that to a large extent the content of such reports is provided by a local official of the club and this official will always be anxious to stress the disadvantageous circumstances under which his club met defeat.
However, we do not feel this should be done by unfairly denigrating the winning side. Your report stated that Dunstablians had 'shot through the league rankings with enormous cash backing'. We have no cash backing other than that which our members can scrape together by their own hard work. We have no fairy godmother. We have no stated aim other than to enjoy our rugby.
Your report also mentions our 'latest import from New Zealand, Marchant'. Neil Marchant was born in Dunstable and is a product of our youth policy.
Also your correspondent gives the impression that half the Commonwealth was playing on our side - not true. Eleven of the side that faced Malvern have the misfortune to be local lads, and, of course, all clubs are only allowed two overseas players.
We are a totally amateur side and enjoyed playing Malvern. We will also enjoy playing them in the return game on March 16 when their 'heroic defence' will once again have the opportunity to exercise itself.
We would be grateful if you could publish this letter in order that any misunderstandings regarding our club can be corrected.
Andrew Nye, vice-president, Dunstablians RFC, Bidwell Park, Houghton Regis, Beds.
